The alumni who have become members are mostly all well placed in life in various high stations, including many Distinguished Alumni Awardees and faculty members. This Club is mainly meant for social interactions between the alumni and with the faculty. It is absolutely intended to keep this Club as a decent, good quality and exclusive-for-alumni Club. The Bye-laws have provisions to keep out undesirable elements, (if any among IIT alumni!)
- What are the rates?
Please see the latest Rate Structure displayed in the Club's web site: http://iitalumniclub.org/
- What will I have to pay as recurrent charges?
Monthly charges and minimum charges will be as applicable to similar clubs; likely to be Rs 250 per month monthly subscription with reduction to Rs 2800 if paid in one annual lump sum. Minimum charge would be Rs 100 per month. Usage charges will apply as usual to food and beverages, access to special facilities. These are subject to change from time to time.
- Where is the Club?
For Phase I, leased premises have been taken up at an extremely central location in East Abhiramapuram. The club was launched for beta testing on 17th October 2010. Serious efforts are also on to get some land for the Club for Phase II expansion, within about three years.
- What is the guarantee that the Club would develop the way you are projecting?
No one can guarantee such developments for any Club or even the long-term survival of the Club! The Club is not being run by any profit-motivated entrepreneurs but by other alumni interested in being of service to others. Sincere and serious efforts are being put in to get the development going as quickly as possible. All are welcome to join in the efforts to contribute to the same and make things happen.
- What are the growth plans for the Club?
For Phase I, 4500 sq ft of leased premises have been finalised at an extremely central location in East Abhiramapuram. In Phase II we hope to get land of about 1 to 3 acres and develop comprehensive facilities like any other Club. The planning as of now is:
Phase - I: Lounges - General & TV Viewing, Meeting/Banquet Room, Restaurant- 1 Indoor & I outdoor, Library, Indoor games: Carom, Chess, Cards and a Wii console, Gymnasium, Kitchen, Pantry, Office Room, Foyer with Security, WiFi facility.
Phase - II: Above facilities on a larger scale, Residential rooms with attached bath: 10-15,Gymnasium, Sauna ,Beauty Parlour/ Saloon, DVD/ CD Rental ,Out door games: Tennis, Indoor Games: Cards - Squash, Swimming Pool, Conference Hall / Open Hall (about 250 capacity), Meeting Rooms (2-4), Large parking area.
The above is subject to progressive availability of finance and land.
- The entrance fees are too high!
The entrance fees are very very low compared to that is prevailing for any other similar club! It is kept at this low level to help alumni to get access to high class facilities. It is hoped to ensure financial viability by appealing to the well-placed alumni to take on higher financial participation, advertisements, organizing events, etc
- Why so many different types of memberships?
To ensure financial viability it is necessary to get more funds by offering special membership classes. Apart from regular memberships and the special ones with higher fees, Faculty memberships, Temporary memberships and Honourary Memberships for Distinguished people only are offered.
- Is the Club an Exclusive Facility?
Yes! The Club is meant only for IIT Alumni and their families. Others cannot become members, except a limited number of Honourary Memberships for very distinguished select people. Even for Institutional Membership, only alumni can come as members. IIT faculty are allowed as long as they are permanent serving facility.
- Is the membership transferable?
No. Since we want to keep the membership as exclusive, this would not be possible.
- What are the benefits of Institutional membership?
The approved Institution can nominate to this prestigious Club a pre-specified number of members (who are all IIT alumni) for a specified number of years without paying entrance fees. However, monthly subscription and usage charges would be applicable.
- What do I get by being a Donor or Principal or Patron members?
The names of such Members will be displayed suitably in a prominent place in the temporary and permanent premises. They will not have to pay monthly sub for a specified number of years. They will have free residential room facilities for a specified number of years. They can sponsor a certain number of (alumni only) members free. More than the freebies, it is the prestige of being associated with an exclusive Club such as this which would appeal to people; also, the sprit of helping this fledgling alumni facility to take off and be a success!
- Will I get my money's worth in this Club?
Yes! It depends on what your driving force is! If you want facilities you will get them, may be by and by. If you want to be associated with a prestigious facility with a high brand value, you will get it. If you enjoy an intellectually stimulating atmosphere it will be there. If you want to contribute to your alma mater in many ways, you will get the opportunities! The choice is yours!
- Why nothing has happened all this time since July when we met first?
Boss, give us a break! This is a start-up Club which has been in gestation for over two decades and only now we all could come together and try to make to happen! We have pegged the entrance fee very low to be affordable to a large number of junior alumni and for the IIT faculty. The land and real estate rates in Chennai are quite high and we want to be as close to IITM as possible, not in Mahabalipuram! It takes some time to locate such good premises and make the other arrangements. Rest assured, you have a sincere, achievement-oriented Committee trying to push things as quickly as possible.
- Who are the people behind the Club?
It is all like-minded alumni from different IITs settled down in Chennai. They are captains of the industry, entrepreneurs, distinguished alumni, faculty and service-minded alumni, trying to put together the Facility and make it successful (in terms of user enjoyment). The Managing Committee has a limited term as per he bye laws and any member can participate in the elections and become a member of the governing body.
- Is this thing legal?
The Club ahs been registered as a Society in Tamil Nadu under the Societies Act. The Club's Auditors are the well-reputed NC Rajagopal & Co who also audit most of the institutions associated with IIT-M. Many of the members of the Managing Committee have been office-holders in the alumni activities of various IITs in the past.
- What support will we get from the IIT?
For various reasons it would be better to keep the Club as an independently run entity, which is run entirely by alumni. IITs may not be able to take up any official position or offer support to such an independent organization in one city at this stage. However, we hope to build bridges with the various IITs through the faculty and also use the manifold resources of the alumni to contribute to the alma maters. Once this Club is properly established and more such Clubs spring up in the other cities also where other IITs are located, the ties with the IITs can be forged more strongly. We are sure that in the years to come there will be a vibrant relationship between the Club and the IITs.
- Where would I get more information?
At the Club's web site: http://iitalumniclub.org/ or by sending an email to admin@iitalumniclub.org
- Can I use the facilities inside IIT-M?
We do not intend to approach IITM now for these facilities, as they are already stretched for the ever-increasing number of students and would like to build up our own, mainly in Phase 2.
- Does the Club have any bye-laws or rules?
Yes! As a Registered Society the Club has its own bye laws/ rules and memorandum of association, which are readily to members on request.
- How do I become a member?
Please visit the club's web site http://iitalumniclub.org/ and register online and then send a cheque to the address specified. Thank you and a warm Welcome as a Member!
